How to publish with us
Publishing options
IMG Research operates as a hybrid open access journal. Upon acceptance of an article for publication, authors will be provided with the opportunity to determine the publication approach for their article:
- Traditional publishing model – published articles are accessible to institutions and individuals who hold subscriptions to IMG Research or who make payments to access specific articles.
- Open Access – upon acceptance of an article for publication, the author(s) or funder(s) are responsible for covering an Article Processing Charge (APC). Subsequently, the ultimate version of the published article becomes openly accessible for all readers without any cost.
Authors might be required to undertake particular steps to adhere to open access mandates from funding organizations and institutions. If your research is backed by a funder that mandates immediate open access (e.g., following Plan S principles), it is advisable to opt for the gold open access route. In such cases, we will guide you towards the compliant path whenever feasible. For authors choosing the subscription publication path, it is essential to agree to the journal’s standard licensing terms, encompassing self-archiving regulations. These licensing terms will take precedence over any other terms asserted by the author or third parties for any manuscript version.

Creative Commons licenses
Open access articles in IMG Research journals are published under Creative Commons license’s. These provide an industry-standard framework to support easy re-use of open access material. Under Creative Commons license’s, authors retain copyright of their articles.
IMG Research articles are published open access under a CC BY license (Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license). The CC BY license is the most open license available and considered the industry ‘gold standard’ for open access; it is also preferred by many funders. This license allows readers to copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format, and to alter, transform, or build upon the material, including for commercial use, providing the original author is credited.
In instances where authors are not allowed to retain copyright to their own article (where the author is a US Government employee for example), authors should contact the Open Research Support team before submitting their article so we can advise as to whether their non-standard copyright request can be accommodated.
Authors are advised to check their funder’s requirements before selecting open access, to ensure compliance. Learn more about funder compliance.
